Give the rod guides a minute of attention
A small inspection belongs before the first cast.

Use good light
Look along the guides and their fittings for obvious damage, looseness, or rough surfaces. Handle the rod carefully and follow its care instructions. If something appears damaged, stop and ask a competent repairer rather than assuming a small fault cannot affect the line.
Record what you find
A photograph can help distinguish an old mark from a new change. Note which section needs attention without trying an improvised repair you do not understand. A useful inspection produces a clear action, not a vague feeling that the rod probably looks fine.
Build a repeatable check
Include guides with the rest of your pre-trip inspection. Keep the process short enough that you will do it again. Prevention is easier to maintain when it is a habit at the bench rather than an elaborate ritual saved for a problem.
