Recognise wear before it becomes a story
Pay attention to the part of the setup that takes the contact.

Look where work happens
Inspect line that has been near abrasive cover, knots, and areas that have carried strain. Work slowly and protect your hands from hooks and sharp edges. Fraying or visible damage calls for attention; do not rely only on the memory that the line was new at the start of the season.
Change with a reason
Follow manufacturer guidance when replacing or storing line. Keep notes on the type and setup so the next decision is based on what you used. Avoid treating a different diameter or material as a universal solution without considering the whole outfit.
Dispose of it properly
Collect removed line in a secure container rather than leaving short pieces loose on the bench or bank. Use an appropriate local disposal or recycling option. Finishing the job includes accounting for the material you took off.
